First step of knowing your water is safe to drink.

You can just use your senses! Your nose and eyes are excellent laboratory equipment.

• Clear Check with your eyes if the water is clear or transparent or that it is not turbid or cloudy.
• No smell. Check with your nose that the water does not stink or smell in any way.
• No color. Use your eyes again to check that your water has no colour.
• No taste. If you use water from a source you do not trust, boil it first and then taste the water. Water should have no taste.

Some people would like to use TDS meters, pH meters and the like, but really no need if the water has a TDS content higher then the acceptable limit you will for sure taste it. Als of the water has a low or high pH your taste buds will tell you.

How do you know whether there are bacteria in your drinking water

You cannot see bacteria; you cannot taste or smell them.  So, your water can be perfectly clear but still contain germs that make you ill. According to a new estimate, there are about one trillion species of microbes on Earth, and 99.999 percent of them have yet to be discovered. Luckily, to check whether your water is safe to drink you only need to check for one bacteria species (or a group of species) namely E.coli.  E. coli is a type of fecal coliform bacteria commonly found in the intestines of animals and humans. E. coli is short for Escherichia coli.   If there is E-coli in your water, it is an indication that your water is contaminated with poo from animals or humans.  That is why it is a good idea to test if there are e-coly bacteria in your water. If there aren’t any your water is safe to drink.

How to test for Bacteria in your drinking water

Your local lab, just send a sample to your local lab. Use clean, sterilized  (new) bottles.
